What success looks like to me – what does success look like to you?

If you want to be successful, start by thinking you are successful already

If you want to be successful, start by thinking you are successful already

What success looks like to me – what does success look like to you?

I have mentioned many times in my blog posts that I read a lot and I listen a lot to the USA’s Success Magazine.  As you can imagine, they talk about success a lot!  I am interested because I feel successful, I believe I have had two successful careers and my family are successful.  However, I am not rich and famous!

I made a decision early on in life that I was going to become successful no matter what.  It wasn’t important to me that I had left school at 15 with just a 10 yards swimming certificate – I was going to be the best at whatever I did – I had a goal a dream and I had a vision.  What could possibly go wrong?

So, what does success look like for me?

I feel successful when I:

  • have significance and influence
  • make a difference in other people’s lives
  • am progressing towards my goals
  • am doing something I love, good at and I am paid to do it
  • play a part in another person’s success
  • am asked to be someone’s mentor or their coach
  • have the respect of my colleagues
  • have the respect of my family
  • have achieved a goal I have set for myself
  • am happy (which is most of the time)

10 habits of a Successful Person:

I didn’t believe (and still don’t) that becoming successful is an accident, so over the years I have set out to look at what makes a person successful and have found a theme – they all have successful habits.  I have chosen my top 10 which I have observed and adopted:

  1. If you want to be successful start by thinking you are successful already
  2. They have a strong work ethic – successful people work incredibly hard and not just between 9 -5
  3. They are disciplined in all aspects of their lives
  4. They put others before themselves
  5. They show gratitude and appreciation
  6. They are optimistic and they have moral courage
  7. They want to be better than they were yesterday. (I score my performance on just about everything I do and try and beat that score the next time)
  8. They don’t compare themselves with others – they focus on their own race
  9. They are students – they never think they should stop learning or developing
  10. They want to make a difference in another person’s life, their team, their organisation and those they support

What Success is not?

  • I don’t consider making a profit to be a ‘success’ to me it means ‘progress’

So what does Success look like for you?

What success looks like to Sam Pullan (teacher and head of year, Presdales School)

Sam says to him it means:

  • doing a job you enjoy
  • having time for friends, family and yourself

Everything else follows from those, or is a happy by-product of them.  For example:

  • if you enjoy your job, you are more likely to be good at it;
  • if you are good at your job you are more likely to be rewarded (in a variety of ways: promotion, pay rise, respect from colleagues etc.), which may well help you continue to enjoy it;
  • you will feel good about yourself if you carve out time for friends, family and yourself (so you are not just defined by your job. Your partner remembers why they are with you, and your children aren’t surprised to see you);
  • Ultimately, if you are feeling good about your job because you enjoy it and good about yourself because your home life is going well, then you are a success.
